Overview
When a national telecom facilities client needed to replace failing water treatment equipment, the scope extended beyond a single system. The facility’s water softener and carbon filtration system required replacement, while its reverse osmosis (RO) system was also due for filter, membrane, and tubing service.
Shafer Mechanical coordinated the work into a single visit. Our plumbing team removed and replaced the defective equipment, brought the softener drain configuration into code compliance, serviced the RO system, and tested the completed installation for leaks, flow, and pressure before signing off.
The result was a comprehensive water treatment solution completed efficiently and with the facility’s operational and compliance requirements in mind.
The Challenge
For facilities teams managing multiple commercial locations, plumbing work needs to be more than a quick equipment swap. Repairs and replacements must meet consistent standards, comply with applicable codes, and minimize the number of service disruptions required at each location.
At this facility, two separate water treatment systems needed attention.
The existing water softener and carbon filtration equipment had failed and required full replacement. At the same time, the facility’s reverse osmosis system needed maintenance, including replacement of aging filtration components and tubing.
Rather than treating these as separate projects, Shafer Mechanical coordinated both scopes of work during the same visit.
The Solution
Our plumbing team began by removing the defective water softener and carbon filtration unit and installing the new equipment.
While completing the replacement, the team also addressed the system’s drain configuration by installing a proper air gap.
This was an important part of the project because an air gap creates physical separation between the water treatment equipment’s discharge line and the drainage system. This helps prevent contaminated drain water from backing up into the water treatment system while bringing the installation into code compliance.
With the softener and carbon filtration work complete, our team turned to the facility’s RO system.
The service included:
- Replacing the RO membrane
- Replacing sediment filters
- Removing and replacing aging tubing
- Inspecting connections throughout the system
- Testing for proper flow and pressure
- Checking the completed work for leaks
By coordinating both systems during the same visit, the facility did not need to schedule multiple separate service appointments to complete the work.
Building Compliance Into the Installation
Code compliance should not be something addressed after equipment has already been installed.
The addition of the proper air gap is a small detail with an important purpose. By creating separation between the equipment discharge and the drainage system, the installation helps protect the water treatment equipment from potential backflow contamination.
For a facilities manager overseeing multiple properties, details like this matter. Consistent, code-compliant installations can simplify facility management while helping reduce the risk of issues being discovered during future inspections or service visits.
Testing Before Sign-Off
Completing the installation was only part of the job.
Before leaving the facility, Shafer Mechanical tested the water treatment systems to verify that the work was performing as intended.
Our team checked the completed installation for leaks, verified water flow and pressure, and confirmed the newly installed and serviced components were operating properly.
That final verification provided the facility team with confidence that both water treatment needs had been addressed before the service visit was closed.
The Results
Shafer Mechanical completed the water treatment replacement and RO service in one coordinated visit.
Project outcomes included:
- Replacement of the failed commercial water softener and carbon filtration equipment
- Installation of a proper air gap for code compliance and backflow protection
- Replacement of the RO membrane and sediment filters
- Replacement of aging RO tubing
- Leak, flow, and pressure testing before project completion
- Two water treatment needs addressed during one coordinated service visit
- No additional return visit required to complete the planned scope
For a national facilities client managing multiple locations, the result was more than functioning equipment. It was a completed scope that met the facility’s standards without creating unnecessary additional service visits.
A Better Approach to Multi-Site Facility Service
Managing plumbing needs across multiple commercial properties requires consistency and coordination.
When several systems at one location need attention, addressing the full scope together can reduce scheduling demands on the facilities team while helping ensure work is completed to the same standard.
Shafer Mechanical approaches commercial plumbing service with the bigger operational picture in mind. We identify what needs attention, coordinate the work efficiently, account for code requirements, and verify performance before considering the job complete.
